Quick answer: A sufficiently powerful and appropriately sized home battery can supply an electric flow boiler. But designing a system to meet 100% of a property's daily heating and household electricity requirement is very different from installing a small solar battery.
Can a battery power an electric boiler?
Yes, provided the battery system is designed for the electrical load. An electric flow boiler can require substantial power while heating, and the battery inverter must be able to meet that demand alongside other essential household equipment.
It is important to distinguish energy capacity, measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), from output power, measured in kilowatts (kW).
Why do both kWh and kW matter?
Suppose an electric boiler draws 12 kW at full power. A battery with 60 kWh of usable stored energy could theoretically supply that load for five hours, before other household demands, if the inverter could actually deliver 12 kW continuously.
If the inverter can supply only 5 kW, however, the boiler cannot run at its full 12 kW solely from that inverter. Increasing stored energy without increasing output power would not solve this limitation.
What does 100% daily coverage mean?
Our proposed heating approach involves sizing the battery for the home's specified 24-hour heating and household electricity demand, using a defined winter design condition. That demand should include space heating, domestic hot water where applicable and ordinary electricity usage.
The specification should also allow for battery operating reserve, usable capacity, conversion losses and expected deterioration over time. Read our guide to full-day battery sizing.
How is the battery charged overnight?
A compatible battery can be charged during eligible lower-priced electricity periods. For illustration, delivering 60 kWh from storage with a round-trip efficiency of 90% would require approximately 66.7 kWh to be purchased to replenish it.
If the cheap tariff window is only six hours, an average grid import of approximately 11.1 kW would be needed, before allowing for simultaneous loads. The incoming supply, charging equipment and tariff rules must all permit the proposed operation.

What happens when solar panels are installed?
Solar generation can power the house directly and replenish some stored energy. In winter, generation may be low, so overnight charging should be designed to maintain heating even through consecutive poor-solar days.
For existing solar owners, read our solar and battery heating guide.
Will the battery work in a power cut?
Not automatically. Some battery installations require specific backup inverters, transfer equipment and protected circuits to operate independently during a grid outage. A battery providing energy storage under normal conditions does not necessarily provide uninterrupted heating.
Is a very large battery financially sensible?
That depends on installation costs, the available overnight tariff, battery life and expected savings compared with oil or alternative heating systems. A large battery may make technical sense without having a reasonable financial payback.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a home battery run an electric boiler?
Yes, when the inverter can supply the required boiler power and the battery contains sufficient usable energy.
How much battery storage is needed for 24-hour heating?
It depends on the home's calculated cold-weather heating and household electrical demand, plus appropriate allowances.
Will my battery automatically run the heating in a power cut?
Not necessarily. Backup operation requires specifically compatible equipment and electrical design.
