Ideal Boiler Fault Codes

When your Ideal boiler displays an error or fault code, it’s the boiler’s way of telling you something isn’t quite right. Each code points to a specific issue — from low water pressure to ignition problems or sensor faults.

Use the list below to look up your Ideal boiler fault code and find out what it means. You’ll see simple checks you can safely try yourself, along with advice on when to call a Gas Safe engineer.

These codes cover the most popular Ideal models, including the Logic, Logic+, Vogue, and Independent ranges. If your model isn’t listed, check the downloadable manuals further down the page for full details.

Remember: a single reset is fine, but if the same code returns or you’re unsure, don’t take risks — contact a qualified engineer to inspect your boiler safely.

⚙️ Common Ideal Boiler Fault Codes

L1 – Flow Temperature Too High
Your boiler has overheated. Turn off the boiler and let it cool. Check that all radiators are open and water pressure is correct (around 1.0–1.5 bar). If it happens again, book an engineer.

L2 – Ignition Lockout / Flame Lost
The boiler has failed to ignite or the flame has gone out. Check your gas supply and reset once. If the code returns, call a Gas Safe engineer — the ignition or gas valve may need attention.

F1 – Low Water Pressure
The system needs topping up. Use the filling loop to bring pressure to around 1.2 bar when cold. If pressure keeps dropping, there may be a leak.

F2 – Flame / Ignition Fault
Similar to L2. Try a single reset after checking the gas supply. If it persists, an engineer should test the ignition components.

F3 – Fan Fault
The boiler’s fan isn’t running as expected. This part moves combustion gases safely — call an engineer to inspect or replace it.

F4 – Flow Thermistor Fault
The sensor monitoring water temperature in the heating circuit may be faulty. Engineer attention needed.

F5 – Return Thermistor Fault
Similar to F4 but on the return side of the heating system. Engineer check required.

F6 – Outside Sensor Fault
If you have an outdoor temperature sensor fitted, it’s not reading correctly. This doesn’t affect heating safety, but may affect efficiency.

F7 – Low Mains Voltage
Your mains power supply has dropped too low for safe operation. When power stabilises, the boiler should reset automatically.

F9 – Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Fault
Electrical communication fault within the boiler. Engineer inspection needed — may involve PCB replacement.

L5 – Boiler Reset Lockout
Too many resets in a short time. Switch the boiler off at the mains, wait 5 minutes, then restart. If it still locks out, call an engineer.

L6 – Flame Detection Fault
The boiler senses a flame when there shouldn’t be one. This could be a sensor or gas valve issue. Engineer required.

C0 – Boiler Chip Card (BCC) Fault
Internal control card fault. Do not attempt repair — engineer visit required.

🔩 Model-Specific Notes

  • Logic / Logic+ Range: Most common codes are F1, L1, L2, and F2.

  • Vogue Range: Often shows similar codes but may also display “C” codes for communication faults.

  • Independent Range: Shares many Logic codes; check manual below for exact meanings.

⚠️ Important Safety Note

Only perform basic visual checks (pressure, reset button, gas credit). Never remove boiler covers — that must be done by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

Your questions answered

Boilers 4 Essex - Ideal Boilers Common Faults – FAQs

Most Ideal boilers can be reset by turning the control knob to the “Reset” position and holding it there for 3 seconds, or by pressing the reset button if your model has one. The display should clear and the boiler will attempt to restart.
➡️ If the same fault code returns after one reset, don’t keep resetting — call a Gas Safe engineer.

Your boiler pressure should typically be between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when cold. If it drops below this, you can top it up using the filling loop underneath the boiler.
➡️ If pressure keeps falling, there may be a leak in the system.

‘L’ and ‘F’ codes are fault indicators. ‘L’ usually means a lockout (the boiler has shut down for safety), while ‘F’ codes often point to specific faults like low pressure, ignition issues, or sensor problems.
➡️ Use the fault code list above to check what your code means.

It’s recommended to have your boiler serviced once a year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. Regular servicing keeps your warranty valid and helps prevent costly breakdowns.
