Quick answer: An electric boiler can sometimes deliver heat more cheaply than an oil boiler when electricity is purchased at a sufficiently low rate. However, an electric boiler on expensive daytime electricity can cost considerably more. The correct comparison is the cost of useful heat, including battery losses and the total installation investment.
How do oil boiler running costs work?
One litre of kerosene heating oil contains approximately 10.35 kWh of fuel energy. An oil boiler converts a proportion of that energy into useful heating, depending on its actual efficiency.
For illustration, if oil costs £1.10 per litre and the boiler operates at 90% efficiency, one litre supplies approximately 9.315 kWh of useful heat. That gives a heat cost of approximately 11.8p per kWh. These figures are illustrative and do not represent a live Essex oil quotation.
How do electric boiler costs compare?
An electric flow boiler normally produces roughly one kWh of heat for each kWh of electricity consumed. At an illustrative 26p/kWh electricity rate, the cost of heat is approximately 26p/kWh before minor system losses.
By contrast, at a hypothetical 9p/kWh overnight electricity rate, with 90% battery round-trip efficiency, stored electricity costs approximately 10p/kWh delivered. This energy-only comparison excludes the battery purchase and installation investment.
Worked example: 2,000 litres of heating oil annually
Assume annual oil usage of 2,000 litres, an oil price of £1.10/litre and 90% boiler efficiency. This produces approximately 18,630 kWh of useful heat annually.
| Measure | Illustrative annual result |
|---|---|
| Oil expenditure | £2,200 |
| Useful heat delivered | 18,630 kWh |
| Battery electricity purchased at 90% round-trip efficiency | 20,700 kWh |
| Electric heating energy cost at 9p/kWh | £1,863 |
| Gross energy-cost difference | £337 |
The hypothetical £337 annual difference is not a projected customer saving. It assumes all required heating electricity can be bought at the cheap rate and excludes battery investment, boiler installation, maintenance, battery replacement, financing, standing-charge differences and other possible costs.
How can solar panels influence the calculation?
Solar electricity consumed by the household or electric boiler may reduce grid imports. Battery storage can shift some solar generation to later hours. However, solar export income may be lost when energy is stored rather than sold, so the net benefit depends on import and export tariffs.

What about a heat pump?
A heat pump can commonly deliver around 2.5–4 units of heat per unit of electricity under suitable conditions. That higher efficiency can mean significantly less electricity is required than for a direct electric boiler.
For a complete decision, compare the electric boiler and battery investment against a heat pump and the cost of continuing with oil. Read our heating system comparison and our installation costs guide.
Calculate the right option for your home
Boilers 4 Essex can discuss your electric boiler replacement options. Accurate calculations should use real oil consumption, a heat-loss assessment, the homeowner's eligible tariff and a fully scoped installation quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an electric boiler automatically cheaper than oil?
No. The relative cost depends on oil prices, actual boiler efficiency, electricity tariff eligibility and battery system costs.
Does storing electricity increase electric boiler efficiency?
No. Battery storage changes when electricity is bought; it does not improve resistance heating efficiency and introduces storage losses.
What should I compare when deciding?
Compare the cost of useful heat and the complete lifetime cost of installing, running and maintaining the alternatives.
